Lexicomp, the current drug database that is used on our platform is becoming obsolete. Before the end of the year, it will stop updating. Because of this, DoseSpot will migrate to a newer drug compendium, Medi-Span to uphold best practices for patient safety.
You must begin the migration before April 30, 2024.
This v2 migration requires development work from your teams to connect to our new v2 API endpoints. If you have not started, you could be putting patients at risk. This change is part of our commitment to reduce dependency on any specific drug database and to introduce a more flexible and future-proofed system.

API v2
Frequently Asked Questions
- More frequent updates to the data – We receive monthly updates with Lexicomp but weekly updates with Medi-Span.
- More data – Medi-Span provides data for approximately 4000 more drugs and supplies than Lexicomp.
- Allergen improvements – Medi-Span categorizes allergens as classes, similar to Lexicomp; however, with Medi-Span, more specific allergens can be tracked at the ingredient level.
- Interaction improvements – Medi-Span can identify interactions across three drugs whereas Lexicomp was limited to two.
- You will be assigned an Integration Specialist to guide you through a customized migration to API v2. New documentation and POSTman collections will be shared.
- You will need to update your token endpoint integration to take advantage of the new security mechanism.
- All endpoints will enforce reasonable rate limits. This is important to safeguard against bursts of incoming traffic and maximize stability. If you reach a limit, you will see a 429 HTTP status code. Your Integration Specialist will share details on these limits. Remember, you can always reduce the need to poll for data through the API by utilizing Push Notifications. Your implementation manager can also help with this if it is new to you.
- Other changes will depend on your current integration. We have mapped out which endpoints have changed and will provide a list tailored to what you use.
- DoseSpot will need to know and coordinate your go-live with API v2. Before that happens, we will run a script to migrate existing records with references to Lexicomp to references with Medi-Span.
- Each drug compendium is unique, this means we will not be able to migrate 100% of these records. In those cases, attempting to copy, reorder, or update the status of a drug or supply that could not be migrated will result in a data validation asking the user or API client to create a new item utilizing the appropriate Medi-Span / v2 endpoints.
- Because Lexicomp data will not be updated beginning the second half of 2024, continuing to use API v1 will result in stale data. New data will not become available and obsolete items will not be removed.
